Cockatrice

A cockatrice is a small, omnivorous, magical creature resembling a bizarre chicken. Notable features are its wild white eyes, wagging tongue, and long, scaly tail, all of which mark them as something darker than their barnyard cousins, for which they manifest a rather odd fear. They are believed to have been created by some twisted mage long ago, but to what end? Perhaps an experiment gone wrong? Who knows? Avoid them if you can, and whatever you do, do not attempt to eat them!
